Feb 18, · The Spalding Gentlemen’s Society was founded in by Maurice Johnson (–) and maintained by him for the next forty years in his hometown of Spalding, Lincolnshire. As stated in its first Minute Book, the Society was intended to foster benevolence and learning among its membership, as well as to raise and maintain a public lending. Arthur Hopkins arrived in the Lincolnshire town of Boston in November to take up the post of Vicar of St Thomas's Church in the working-class parish of Skirbeck Quarter. He was already writing almost daily instalments of a diary for the social resear.
