There are two basic types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep (which has three different stages). Each is linked to specific brain waves and neuronal activity. You cycle through all stages of non-REM and REM sleep several times during a typical night, with increasingly longer, deeper REM periods occurring toward morning.   In Polly Moore’s book, The 90 Minute Baby Sleep Program, she teaches parents how to recognize the sleep cycles, and to use this knowledge to get baby down for a nap easily. According to her, babies from months old, need to take about 45 or 90min naps a day (note 45min = 90min/2), and they should not be awake for more than an hour and. How sleep affects mental health. Every 90 minutes, a normal sleeper cycles between two major categories of sleep — although the length of time spent in one or the other changes as sleep progresses. During "quiet" sleep, a person progresses through four stages of increasingly deep sleep.

Reading at bedtime entertains and relaxes your child, helps to build his or her imagination, makes bedtime something to look forward to, and builds a lifelong enjoyment of reading. But most of all, it's an opportunity for quiet cuddle time with your son or daughter. In honor of this important tradition, bedtime classics both old and new are featured in these recommended books for children ages.   "Human beings are the only species that deliberately deprive themselves of sleep for no apparent gain," says sleep scientist Matthew Walker, author of Why We Sleep.

Instead of thinking of one night’s sleep as a seven- or eight-hour period, break it down into minute cycles. 90 minutes is the length of time it takes you to go through all the stages of one sleep cycle.

Instead of sleeping a typically recommended eight hours, you could sleep for. At the heart of Moore’s  Minute Baby Sleep Program is her NAPS plan. “N” is for “note the time of your baby’s last waking”, “A” is for “add 90 minutes”, “P” is for “play or pursue other activities with your baby”, and “S” is for “soothe your baby to sleep”.

Bedtime readers in our survey averaged slightly more than 90 minutes of sleep each week. That equates to about 78 hours, or slightly more than three days of lost rest each year.
